Art folio update

SECOND BOARD

This piece is the very last piece on my second board I did this part before I did the big painting. This final piece has been done with oil paint. To be able to perform a good oil base paint artwork you need to use linseed oil and turps. To get the right technique you want you to need to start off with layers and build your way up to gather the right technique.

READING (B)LOGS

Movie
Scream
Reading B(log) #1
~"Scream" produced by Cathy Konrad, Cary Woods and directed by Wes Craven is a film about a high school student Casey Becker receives a phone call from an unknown person, asking her, "What's your favorite scary movie?"However things go wrong and the caller starts to threaten Casey's life, demanding her to answer questions about horror movies or otherwise her boyfriend Steve Orth will be murdered, If Casey gets one question wrong. After Casey refuses to answer any more questions she is then murdered and her parents come home to then find her hanging from a tree, But with no sight of the killer anywhere. However the next day the media are surrounding the school asking questions while the police start investigating and asking all the students. That night another girl Sidney Prescott struggles with the anniversary of her mother's death, Sidney waits patiently at home for her friend Tatum Riley to pick her up around 7:00, Sidney receives a threatening phone call from an unknown person, After she hangs up she is attacked by the killer but manages to escape. Sidney's boyfriend, Billy Loomis, arrives shortly after, but after he drops his cell phone, Sidney suspects him of making the call and flees. Billy is arrested and Sidney spends the night at Tatum's house.

I personally think it is a great movie it isn't much of a horror story as such it's a mystery which means, Mystery film is a genre of film that revolves around the solution of a problem or a crime, These types of movies interest me because it gets you thinking about the film and what's going on it makes you take a longer look and trouble think. It focuses on the efforts of the detective, private investigator or amateur sleuth to solve the mysterious circumstances of an issue by means of clues, investigation, and clever deduction.this is shown in the film closer to the end when more and more people start to get murdered and it is left with two people and those two people were Billy and Stu,in the movie Billy says"We already played that game Remember? you lost". However, when Billy was with Sidney upstairs in the bedroom Billy was "killed by the killer " but when Sidney got away and run out into the middle of nowhere and then ended up coming back Billy was dead he faked his murder

Watching this movie made me feel connected to the film because they made it interesting, and it made you think about what's, going on and the film never got boring they kept you hooked into the film the whole time, this is shown when there are the scenes when it's really quite and no one knows what's going on because the killer has kept quite so everyone thinks everything is okay. For example, when everyone sat in the lounge watching a horror movie everyone thought the killer went, away and nothing will happen when actually he's upstairs and outside and has already killed 3 people.in the movie when a group of people we watching the movie Randy said "Never ever under any circumstances say " I'll be right back" because you won't be." for example when one of the people went to go get something to eat out of the kitchen they never came back.I felt connected to the film and found it interesting because especially in these parts I never took my eyes off the screen.

Short written text
On the sidewalk bleeding
Reading b(log) #2
“On the sidewalk bleeding” By Evan Hunter is a short written text about a boy named Andy who was sixteen years, who was stabbed in the ribs with a knife, he had a torn wide gap of flesh on the side of his body. He told his friend Laura that he will only be a few minutes but now he is lying on the sidewalk in a pool of blood which is being slowly washed away by the rain falling down. Little does he know he is slowly dying. He was lying in the rain down a lonely alleyway and 2 different sets of people went down the alleyway and found him (1st person was a lonely drunk that left him because he thought Andy was a drunk boy),  the (2nd person was a boy and a girl that were in a relationship that heard a sound and found Andy lying on the ground but realized he was a part of the Royals and that the Guardians were a part of it and they didn't want to get hurt if they called the police so they left as well). Finally, at the end, the girl named Laura which was his best friend but hoping he the could be together one day, came and found him dead on the sidewalk but didn't want to believe it so she ran crying and didn't stop until she found a police officer. Laura couldn't understand how this all had happened so so very quickly, as soon as the police said that Andy was very much dead there were no more tears just complete silence. Once the police picked up the jacket and found out that Andy was from the (ROYALS) he grabbed out his notebook and began to write.
I personally think this short story brought a little tear to my eye this was because I found it hard to take it in finding out he was only sixteen years of age and still had his whole life ahead of him and all he was wanting was a packet of cigarettes. This type of emotion is shown in the story at the end when Laura found Andy lying on the sidewalk with blood all over him, dead.  For example, Laura says “It's me Laura” and she got no answer-back and she ended up backing away and tears fallen down her cheeks, all she could see was Andy not moving and blood everywhere. This is related to a lot of people in the world today because crimes like this happen nearly everyday families lose their family members because other people make stupid choices that lead people to die.We are aware of 78 violent deaths (murder and manslaughter) notified in the press during 2009, the figure includes 13 children and young people under the age of 18.A shocking number when you consider that many people’s prime motivation for migrating to NZ is because it’s a ‘great place to raise kids.’it gets you thinking is new Zealand actually a great place to raise kids the answer, yes and no will be going through your head when you read information about these incidents when you think about it these issues are quite high and scary.
This information makes me feel connected because it drags you into the story and makes you feel like it's all happening right there in front of you.All the emotions hit you and make it all seem so real. This happens to people all over not only New Zealand but all over the whole world, and makes you think how could these kids only so young so through something like it and not get to carry on and live the rest of their life. This is shown in the text when” Andy is lying on the ground knowing he's lost too much blood and is going to die. This brought me to thinking about something very personal that happened at Christmas last year when the exact same age kids weren't able to live the rest of their lives because some people made some stupid decisions which lead the driver to crash. This makes me feel lucky to be able to live every day happy and make good choices, having this thought in the back of my head knowing that something like this could happen to myself or anyone around me at any time.

Short Story
The story of two users
Reading B(log) #3
“The story of two users” By Tom Scott and Trevor Grice Is about a couple of boys named Jeremy, Ben,and Bart who were all boarding students, that wanted to be different these boys were getting bored with being at school so they “started to do things a little on the naughty side” so they started smoking dope. They did this because they thought drugs were cool and they got more respect and they felt different. They wanted to feel different so they decided that doing drugs was the way to go so they got their drugs from gangs.Because of the different drug they were using this made them go downhill they started leaving school to get stoned and stole money to be able to buy weed and joints. But they weren’t the only ones that loved smoking weed, however, they worshiped people like Bob Marley, Robert Plant, and Jimmy Page, these 3 people smoked more weed faster and harder than anyone ever could.

However, This made me think that people out there are in this exact same condition as these boys, people that live like this scare me because they think it’s healthy and safe but deep down it's killing them faster.I personally think doing drugs is a bad idea not only if it destroying you from the inside out but people think it's going to make their lives better and have more fun but actually it’s ruining their lives and hurting their loved ones. However drugs do have their positives and negative effects on us humans studies have shown that In what could be a key moment for advocates of legal cannabis, the U.S. government has admitted that the drug can shrink cancer cells. In a page of official government advice, the U.S. government now says,, ‘Cannabis has been shown to kill cancer cells in the laboratory.’
The site says that the effect has so far been seen in rodent studies, and cautions,  ‘At this time, there is not enough evidence to recommend that patients inhale or ingest Cannabis as a treatment for cancer-related symptoms or side effects of cancer therapy.

When I was reading this short story it got me thinking that in the 21st century the age is becoming younger for people having use of drugs I find most people won't know that their children and family members are smoking it.However, in this story, their parents did know that's why they were at boarding school and their parents were hurt by this because they know how it's affecting the children.” we knew our parents were emotional wrecks… thinking back, this part makes us feel sick”. Reading that quote made me wonder how many other young people are going through the same thing. I felt connected to this story by the information that was given to keep me hooked in and I didn’t get bored which got me thinking about the world and there is a lot of people going to this cause.

Short story
A mother's story
Reading B(log) #4
A mother's story written by Tom Scott and Trevor Grice is about a young girl called Emily, this all started when she was getting beaten by a group of girls at school. The family didn’t like what was going on so they called the police one day when Emily got punched in the nose by the same group of girls, from there Emilie's behavior started to get worse.Emily began lying to family, disobeying the rules at home and school and having bad mood swings, Emily said “her new friends were the bad kids at school and she now started to feel popular that she was hanging out with the bullies of the school. After years and years of running away and beginning to use drugs and flat with users, she moved from flat to flat and then back home and then to running away again she did this many times before returning to another flat that woke her up and made her get into a church home and Emily started going to Narcotics Anonymous meetings to help her overcome her addiction to drugs. After a while, her body began to suffer her mother said “she had no doubt she was going to die”.four and a bit weeks later Emily’s mother saw Emily’s death notice in the local newspaper. When Emily was brought home in the coffin that was the last time her mum and family ever Emily lying so peaceful not giving anyone any gray and her mother finally knew Emily was now clean and safe.

I personally think reading this short text gave me a more in-depth understanding of how badly some families have it when one of their family members is using.I began to understand this short story towards the end when it began to get emotional.I felt connected to the story when her mother found her death statement in the newspaper after 4 weeks of her being missing. The effects of using drugs are quite high and most cases are never spoken of.Currently this month there has been seven death due to Synthetic cannabis usage in Auckland, with ambulance staff saying they also see about 20 users a day suffering from “life-threatening effects” from this drug. But however, alot younger teenagers/ kids are able to get ahold of these drugs.

This Information made me realize how many people out there that are going through the same thing as Emily and her family did, and how easily it is to die and get seriously hurt from these drugs.”I found being frightened was a normal everyday feeling” Emilie's family went every day wondering where Emily was and when she was coming home. Her family spent hours and hours wondering if their precious girl was still dealing or if she was getting clean. Emily was slowly killing herself from the inside out and it was also destroying her family as well. This made me feel think about how many families and friends are going through the exact same thing as Emily and her family and how many other people it’s affecting.

This text made me realize that the age of users is getting younger and younger, but also these drugs are becoming easier to get ahold of as well. I found out that there is a Long-term use of drugs can have major effects on your body however, you can avoid worsening adverse effects and even turn them around by getting the help you need. This is what Emily's family tried to do before Emily's addiction got worse, however, it was too late because Emily kept running away and wouldn’t tell any of her family where she was.Emily's death was such a small mistake and could of been prevented if Emily did the right thing and got the help she needed but instead “ He drug patches fell off at a rock concert and instead of going home to put on new ones she brought an addict’s one-day supply of methadone”.  “she then went home and she put on her patches, and the effect was to overdose her at about 6.00am in her sleep”, and because of Emily’s she now has her family living without their girl and trying to live happily and clean of drugs. Many families have gone through exactly this but now we need to prevent this from happening to younger people and their families.

Short story The Milgram Experiment Reading B(log) #5
“The milgram experiment” by Saul Mcleod is an article about a man called stanley milgram, a psychologist at yale university, In 1962 he conducted an experiment on obedience.Milgram measured the eagerness of participants to comply with an authority figure. I personally think that going back and reading it a second time gave me a better understanding of the text,I found it rather hard to understand the first time reading it and trying to understand what the text was about ,but going through again gave me a much better understanding of the concept of the text, I found this confusing because the language features were hard for me to comprehend.I found it confusing trying to understand what “Saul Mcleod’ was talking about because i couldn't comprehend what was going on until i had read it the second like and asked my classmates to explain to me what they understood of the text. Most people were willing to go and obey authority but in fact 65% of people were willing to go up to the highly voltage because they were told to, All of the participants continued to 300 volts. I personally would not go up to the voltage because i wouldn’t want to hurt myself or the other person or thing on the other side of the voltage, but in fact from a very young age we have been told what to do and to do as we are told by our parents and guardians,so we did as we were told as a sign of respect to our elders. Reading the milgram experiment made me feel upset and hurt even though from a young age we have been told what to do by our parents and guardians, but in fact this hurts me reading this because they have to do as they are told,Because they have to choose weather to walk away and get killed or to stay and obey orders and hurt someone else or something in the process. But this is something i would hate to do,Getting forced into i highly powered voltage is highly dangerous and imagine if there is a person on the other side you have no idea what is on the other side all you know is that you have to be put into this highly voltage room and you have no idea of the outcome. This text makes you think about what you are reading and the severity of the text, This makes me have a better understanding of different choices can affect different people, the text shows us that whether you have to obey orders or choose for yourself.

Short story
The Yellow Wallpaper
Reading B(log) #6

The yellow wallpaper written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a collection of journal entries written by a woman whose physician husband (John) has rented an old mansion for the summer. The couple moves into the upstairs nursery. As a form of treatment, the unnamed woman is not aloud to working, and is encouraged to eat well and get plenty of exercise and air, so she can recover from what he calls a "temporary nervous depression”. The story explains parts you would think there is someone else in the room with this woman however it's not , it's the woman herself becoming the girl in the wallpaper.

Update on Art filo

7th September 2017
week 7
Art

This is the very first half of my board, the techniques I have used are drawings, Chalk, Etching, Painting, Photos, and Spray paint. During the lay out of my folder, I have used these techniques to gather more inspirational concept that explains my artwork from my own understanding. some f the photos are railway tracks, plain roads, a rundown abandoned house, and some photos of a cemetery, the painting is the angel and the cross at the bottom right corner, the very first one on my board is a drawing of a babies feet and some feathers, the next on is a drawing in chalk of a baby sleeping, and the next one is an etching of feathers.and the other 3 paintings that are left over at the bottom left corner are done in spray paint.

This is the second half of my board the techniques I have used on this side are spray paint and an etching. the very first one is a spray pain of the moon and a waterfall with bushes on the outside. the etching is the angel and the cross which I have taken the ideas of the angel and cross from board one and out them together as an etching to form a piece. The 3rd piece is another spray paint art work of some train tracks going into the middle of nowhere surrounded by bush and trees with some containers.

for the next 3 pieces on my board will be a huge piece of everything combined together, this artwork will be done as a spray pain but I will have dry brush techniques and etching part away to make the detailed part more effective. This piece will have a combination of railway tracks, the old run down abandoned house, the Angel/baby, and making sure I use as many different brush techniques as I can making sure I get it the right effect that is needed.

Research topic Internal assessment

Title: Bacteria and disinfectant's

Purpose: How concentration can affect the performance rate of disinfectants in killing micro-organisms

research:
Question one: Active ingredients in Dettol ( Chloroxylenol)
The active ingredients in Dettol are chloroxylenol which is an antiseptic and disinfectant which is mainly used for skin disinfection and cleaning surgical instruments.

Question two: How does it work
Dettol is one of those chemicals which we instantly recognized by its distinctive smell. It is an aromatic compound derived from phenol, which contains a significant chlorine atom, helping us in our continuous fight against unwanted bacteria.

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT:

AIM: I want to investigate how different concentrations of disinfected stop the bacteria from growing.
Hypothesis: I predict that the savlon will leave a circle round the white circle paper where the bacteria have been killed by the savlon.I predict this because the savlon is a disinfectant and should kill the bacteria.

Purpose: How different disinfectant concentrations can affect the growth and reproduction of micro-organisms.

FAIR TEST
Which variable will be changed? (This is the independent variable)
The concentration of the Savlon
How will the independent variable be changed?
we will change the independent variable by changing the number of drops of water to the number of drops of savlon
Give a suitable range of values for this variable
 - 0% 0:10 concentration of water
 - 10%  1:9 concentration (one drop of the 1:9(savlon) and 9 drops of water making sure you clean the water each time you go into the water)
-50% 5:5 concentration (one drop of the 5:5(savlon) and 5 drops of water making sure you clean the water each time you go into the water )
- 100% 10:0 concentration (one drop of 10:0(savlon) and 0 drops of water making sure you clean the water each time you go into the water )

FAIR TEST
Which variable will have to be measured or observed in order to get some data or information from the investigation? (This is the dependent variable)
The variable that will be measured is the circle rings around the Savlon paper that have the different concentrations of savlon to see how much bacteria has been killed.

How will the dependent variable be measured or observed?
The dependent variable will be measured in millimetres, I will do this by using a ruler and measuring it from one side of the circle to the other side of the circle.

  1. Other variables that need to be controlled to make your results more accurate.
Other variables
Describe how this variable will be controlled or kept the same.
Bacteria (yogurt)we will keep this the same by adding water to the yogurt making it easier to spread across the agar plate this will then keep the bacteria controlled because we will make it all the same amount and keep it inside the agar plate.
Ethanol (Sterilize equipment )We will keep the Ethanol the same by dipping the tweezers into the Ethanol and then putting it through the flame to keep it sterilized. This will help keep it controlled by having the amount of ethanol put on the tweezers when they are put into the jar making sure you have roughly the same amount of ethanol on the tweezers and then through the flame.

Pipette We will keep the pipette the same by making sure we keep it clean each time we go and get another concentration. This will help keep it controlled by making sure we dont mix the concentration together when getting the water and keeping it clean

How will you ensure that your results are reliable? Our results were reliable Because we used three agar plates, This gave us similar result on each agar plate. This helped us gather a better understanding of how savlon reactions with bacteria in 48 hours. Our results we similar because we made sure every step we did was actuate and didn't mix the concentrations together. This also helped us to be able to see the size of the circle from the disinfected ring this helped us determine if we made a mistake.

Notes from your trials. We note that having the three agar plates it helped us determine how well our experiment worked and if we did anything wrong.

Equipment:
-Agar plate   -Yoghurt    -Savlon   -Spotting tile    -Water    -Pipette
-Tweezers    -Ethanol    -Pen         -Cotton bud     -Filter paper
-Whole punch   -Tape   -Bunsen burner

METHOD:

1.label the agar plate into four sections
2.smear the yogurt evenly around the plate with a cotton bud.
3.fill one-half of the beaker of water and one-half of a small beaker with savlon.
4.dilute the savlon in the spotting tile
- 0% 0:10 concentration of Savlon
 - 10%  1:9 concentration (one drop of the 1:9(savlon) and 9 drops of water making sure you clean the water each time you go into the water)
-50% 5:5 concentration (one drop of the 5:5(savlon) and 5 drops of water making sure you clean the water each time you go into the water )
- 100% 10:0 concentration (one drop of 10:0(savlon) and 0 drops of water making sure you clean the water each time you go into the water )

5. Hole punch the filter paper four times
6. Drip the tweezers in ethanol and wave throw flame.
7. Use the tweezers to pick up one hole punched circle when dropping in the 100% concentration
8.Then pick up it up and put onto the agar plate
9. Repeat the ethanol in the flame process, use the tweezers to pick up the next whole punched circles in the concentration and repeat the process with all four circles
10. When done tape the end of the agar plate and leave overnight.

Changes made to the method After the investigation
In this investigation, we needed to make a few changes to the method to gather a better and fair test. The first change we made was to step 2, we made a change to this step because we found that if we put water with the yogurt to make it more of a liquid which made it easier for it to be evenly spread across the agar plate. The second change we made was to step 4 with the dilutions of the savlon, we changed this step because we wanted to see the outcome of the concentration.

Analysis:

Interpretation of the data
This data shows/ Conclusion: This data shows that my prediction of the savlon will leave a circle round the white circle paper where the bacteria have been killed by the savlon.I predicted this because the savlon is a disinfectant and should kill the bacteria. After completing The graph my Prediction was proven correct. This was proven with the picture above and how the higher concentration of the savlon had an increased amount of the circle compared to the other concentrations.

Evaluation: Discussion and Evaluation of the Method and Data: Some of the questions i asked myself during this experiment were...
  • How does savlon kill bacteria?
  • What is savlon the made up of?
  • why do bacteria grow so fast?
  • what are disinfectants?
  • what do those chemicals do to the structure
  • What is the difference between a disinfectant and an antiseptic
Discussion: Environmental factors
The chemical we used to kill the bacteria was savlon which is a disinfectant. Disinfectants are liquid chemicals that kill bacteria.savlon works by using the two antiseptics cetrimide and chlorhexidine gluconate to kill bacteria These .The difference between a disinfectant and an antiseptic is a disinfectant are supposed to destroy microorganisms which then infects non-living objects and an Antiseptics are used to kill living cells to destroy any type of infections.Savlon breaks through the cell membrane because one end of the molecule has a positive charge and the other end has a negative charge this means when we use savlon they shatter the cell membrane as well as destroy the balance inside the cell.
I personally think that this experiment was reliable because it gave me the information I was looking for and how much the savlon killed off the bacteria.

Structure of Bacteria :
Bacteria is an essential for human life as well as life on earth, bacteria has a huge role in causing disease for humans however bacteria have the benefits that are good for the health.Bacteria is a gel-like environment that is composed of water, enzymes, nutrients, wastes, and gases. However, the cell structure contains ribosomes, chromosomes, and plasmids. The function of bacterial cells begins and ends with collecting enough nutrients to survive.

Cytoplasm- Gel-like material inside the cell which holds the cell organelles (contents).
Cell membrane- A flexible barrier which controls what enters and exits the cell.
Capsule- Outer layer which protects the cell and aids in defense against the immune system.
Ribosomes- Location of protein synthesis.
Nucleoid- Cells genetic information which codes essential life processes.
Flagellum- Tail which aids in cell movement.
Cell wall- Strong layer which piece of DNA which codes for additional NON-essential processes.
Plasmid-  A small circular piece of DNA which codes for additional NON-essential processes.

The 3 life processes: Growth and Reproduction
Growth
Phase 1: lag phase-Bacteria initially placed in the culture begin to take nutrients, synthesize their RNA and their proteins. They are not ready to replicate yet.

Phase 2: Exponential or lag phase- Bacteria replicate quickly, using the readily available nutrients in the broth.

Phase 3: Stationary phase- Depletion of essential nutrients causes the bacterial growth rate and death rate to be equal during this phase.
Phase 4: Death phase- Bacteria as the nutrients are no longer readily available.

Evaluation:
I personally think that this experiment went really well, I found that this experiment was reliable because after 24 hours we gathered accurate results the were appropriate for this experiment. The information we gathered from one of the agar plates was similar for the other 2, this means that our experiment was accurate and worked better than we thought it would. The only problem we had with our experiment was that our concentration for our 50% had a bigger clear circle around the white ring compared to the 100% concentration as well as our % concentration, I think something went wrong while we were doing the experiment. Because the results showed that the 0% concentration killed off bacteria and it shouldn't have. Because water can't kill bacteria. And for next time we should make sure that all the concentrations are measured right and make sure nothing goes wrong.  .I found that my hypothesis( I predict that the savlon will leave a circle round the white circle paper where the bacteria have been killed by the savlon.I predict this because the savlon is a disinfectant and should kill the bacteria.) was accurate because we got the results we needed for the right information.
